The Palisades
(from photograph of the U.S. Forest Service)

The High Sierra attain their culmination in the Palisades (14,252) -- a wall with no break under 13,500 feet for 20 miles -- in the basin of the Middle Fork of the Kings River in the Kings Canyon National Park. The P.C.T. crossing Mather Pass (12,675) reaches their bases, from which these difficult peaks can be ascended by expert climbers.
