Mt. Whitney
(from photograph by Ramsey, Lone Pine, U.S. Forest Service)

Mt. Whitney (14,596) the biggest mountain in the United States rises 9,500 feet above the desert canyon floor of Owens Valley. The direct ascent of this east face requires expert skill and has been conquered by only a few daring climbers. A good horse trail ascends the canyon to the left and reaches the west slopes, where the P.C.T. offers a not difficult climb.
